Workforce Pathways

2023/2024 TCCAC Workforce Pathways Program

(July 1, 2023-June 30, 2024)

With funding provided through CDSS’s QCC Workforce Grant, The Tribal Child Care Association of California (TCCAC) has developed a workforce program to support child care providers in all settings. This program provides teachers in centers, providers with family friend and neighbor programs, aunts and grandmas operating relative care programs, everyone who is dedicated to caring for Tribal children in California an opportunity to further develop their skills in culturally relevant ways.

TCCAC will support participants by identifying and overcoming barriers to reaching goals through financial supports, identifying resources and incentivizing goal completion with a stipend program.

Workforce Requirements:

• You must be a current child care provider for children in Tribal Early Learning and Care Programs age 0-5 years.
  Employment verification is required.
• iPinwheel Application Deadline: December 31, 2023
• Register a new account: https://tccac.ipinwheel.org/StaffApplication/Account/Register
• You do not need to re-register on iPinwheel if you participated in the 22/23 Workforce Year, but you must notify your Workforce Advisor that you want to participate again and schedule your PD Plan Meeting.
• Stipends provided for all courses/ trainings completed between July 1, 2023 – June 15, 2024.
• Each participant will work with the Workforce Advisor to set goals and identify resources needed. You must meet with your Workforce Advisor to create a Professional Development Plan to receive your stipend.
• There may be a cap on stipend totals. Potential earning bonuses available dependent on program participation
  and availability of funds.
• Stipends will be paid out in October 2024.

TCCAC Higher Education:

TCCAC wants to ensure participants are supported to meet their higher education goals. Participants working towards Teacher Certification, Associates Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, or Master’s Degree with an emphasis on Early Learning
and Care will receive stipends upon completion.

TCCAC can support with books, materials, and other expenses related to reaching your higher education goals.

The Workforce Advisor will assist with goal setting and identifying needed supports.

TCCAC Higher Education Pathway 

Through our Higher Education Pathway,  TCCAC wants to ensure our participants  are supported to meet their higher  education goals. Participants for this  pathway are working towards Certification, Associates Degrees,  Bachelor’s Degrees or higher with an  emphasis on Early Learning and Care.  TCCAC can support with tuition costs,  books, materials and any other expense  related to obtaining your higher education  goals. The TCCAC Workforce Advisor will  work with each participant to set goals,  identify needed supports. The TCCAC will  incentive goal completion based on the  participant’s professional development  plan. The incentive structure for higher  education is as follows: 

TCCAC Professional Development Pathway 

TCCAC has created these custom pathways to support professional development for Tribal Child Care providers. Each of the five pathways have options for which trainings the participant would like to complete based their individualized professional development plan. The pathways include:

• The Journey Toward Healing This pathway focuses on healing and resiliency by addressing topics around trauma faced by children, families, providers, and communities. The Journey Toward Healing conversations videos and materials created through the partnership with Brazelton Touchpoints Center will be the foundation for this pathway. These are self paced modules on the Coaching Companion platform.

• Tribal Child Care Health and Safety Standards and Best Practices This pathway focuses on basic health and safety standards required for Tribal Child Care programs, as well as ways to go beyond the basics with best practices. Participants can choose topics that are most relevant for them and their programs. The TCCAC Health and Safety Manual will be the foundation for this pathway. These are self-paced modules on the Coaching Companion platform.

• Coaching Companion A yearlong collaboration where teachers/providers and coaches come together in reflective dialogue as they look at improving their practice through the use of evidence based resources using Coaching Companion’s vast catalogue of training cycles.

• Family Enagement- Parent Cafes– TCCAC has partnered with the Child Care Resource Center to create this pathway for those wanting to increase their skills for engaging families and host parent cafes in their communities. These trainings can be done virtually or a combination of in person and virtual.

• Nature Explore TCCAC has partnered with Nature Explore to offer a
  variety of engaging, inspiring, research-based workshops to support
  comprehensive learning with nature. This pathway is a four session series that will engage participants in Nature Explore’s interactive virtual and in person workshops, hands-on activities, conversation, reflection and more.

TCCAC Professional Development

TCCAC has created custom pathways to support professional development for Tribal Child Care providers. Stipends provided for Pathway trainings as well as other approved professional development trainings and certifications. Most trainings will receive a stipend at the rate of $20/ per hour, unless otherwise noted. See PD Pathways below.

Health & Safety Pathway

This pathway focuses on basic health and safety standards required for Tribal Child Care programs and ways to go beyond the basics with best practices as well as incorporating nature and culture into health.

The Discovery Source –Controlling Anger & Impulse: Tucker Turtle Kit Northern Summit, Redding, CA (1.5 hour) In early childhood programs, young children frequently require support and adult guidance and instruction to express their emotions appropriately, play jointly with peers, and use basic problem-solving strategies. Tucker Turtle used a scripted social story that helps her to manage impulse-control issues: in early childhood settings, many accidents occur in classrooms (e.g., children bumping into one another; children knocking over others’ constructions), and some children interpret these accidents as purposeful, hostile acts. One essential ingredient is to help children reframe and modify their processes to see more neutral interpretations of others’ behaviors. This session reviews the Tucker Turtle Technique as a visual tool to help children to learn how to control their emotions and handle possible solutions, assisting teachers with practical and age-appropriate strategies to modify their thoughts and promote self-regulation.

THRIVE Workshop Series:

Administrators/Leaders THRIVE Cohort (Virtual/ Zoom) 8 Session starting in September 2023 Thursdays 3:00-4:30pm *Limited to 15 people. Look at what burnout is and is not, where you and your employees may fall on the burnout spectrum, and what to do about it. Learn practical, evidence-based strategies to help improve your resilience and life balance as well as strategies for structuring the work environment to improve these areas for you and your employees. During the eight weeks, you will receive individualized support and strategies from your facilitators and your cohort. The session structure is as follows: The first session is a presentation of new material and a facilitated group discussion. Homework is given to prepare for the next session. The following week’s session will focus on the application of the homework and a group coaching session. This rhythm continues for the duration of the 8-week cohort, e.g. content week, followed by group coaching week.

This pathway is recommended for child care administrators and lead teachers who provide direct services and would like to sharpen their early learning leadership skills. The goal is to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and abilities of early care directors and emerging leaders to ensure quality child care programs for young children.

The six-session Community of Practice (CoP) is open by invitation only to CECMP Alternative Pathways Participants

September 23 and January 3 sessions are in person sessions, and the remaining six will be delivered on-line, via Zoom.

Coaching Companion (Virtual) Choose any coaching companion cycle to support your professional development goals. Coaching Companion is a six-session collaboration where teachers/providers and coaches come together in reflective dialogue as they look at improving their practice using evidence-based resources using Coaching Companion. Each coaching cycle starts with a shared goal and moves through action plan steps ending in a focused observation where the participants will share short classroom videos with their coach. Only 10 spots available. Participants must complete all six sessions to receive $300 stipend.

Engaging Families in Tribal Communities Pathway

TCCAC has partnered with the Child Care Resource Center to create this pathway for those wanting to increase their skills for engaging families and hosting Parent Cafes in their communities.

CCRC Regional Parent Cafe Trainings

Northern California- October 13, 2023 -Eureka, CA (all day in-person training)

Southern California- October 16, 2023- La Jolla, CA (all day in-person training)

This Parent Café training is for tribal child care providers. The Parent Café model is based on the foundation of Strengthening Families 5 Protective Factors and has proven to be an effective way to engage parents in discussions around topics that are relevant to their community. Programs have reported an increase in parent engagement and an interest for more cafes. Café conversation themes and topics are flexible and can be developed to address the needs of any situation. The goals for parent cafes is to provide engagement, connections, learning and opportunities for Parent Leadership building. During this training, participants will learn about the framework of the café and work on creating a café that they may take back with them to their program. Incentives: These trainings are completely free! Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants. There will be incentives and raffles! TCCAC Workforce Participants can submit training certificates to Workforce for a stipend. And PDGR funds can provide all eligible programs with café stipends of up to $2400 per café for participants to facilitate cafes in their community before the end of the 2023 year.

Trauma Informed Care/ Parent Cafe Cohort for FFN & FCC (Virtual/ Zoom) Cohort limited to15 people. Must attend all sessions. Participants (limited to Family Friend and Neighbor & Family Child Care Providers) will engage in 8 hours of training on Trauma Informed Care (Definitions of trauma, The impact of trauma on the brain and children’s behavior, Key strategies to support children, build their resilience, and minimize the adverse effects of trauma) and continue the conversation with their cohort in 3 Provider Cafés. The café sessions are intended for providers to engage in meaningful conversations around Trauma Informed Care, with questions focused on self-care, their strengths and challenges while providing TIC, and growth within the field. Conversations will be opportunities to learn from one another but also get social support from others who are also providing care to children who have experienced trauma. The five protective factors are woven into the cafes. This experience will build knowledge on caring for children who are experiencing trauma and provide opportunities to share and learn from peers.

Strengthening Families / Protective Factors Live Cohort (Virtual/ Zoom) 7 Sessions on The Five Protective Factors are the foundation of the Strengthening Families Approach: parental resilience, social connections, concrete support in times of need, knowledge of parenting and child development, and social and emotional competence of children. Research studies support the common-sense notion that when these Protective Factors are well established in a family, the likelihood of child abuse and neglect diminishes. Research shows that these protective factors are also “promotive” factors that build family strengths and a family environment that promotes optimal child and youth development.

Cultural Humility Pathway

This pathway offers opportunities to understand the accurate history of Native Americans; explain the historical process of the extreme systematic trauma to the Native population and show how California Natives are still present, active, and involved in the modern world. Examples and explorations of tribal resilience, medicine, storytelling, and culture.

Native American Historical and Traditional Healing Project- TCCAC COHORT (Virtual/ Zoom) *Limited to 30 people, participants must attend all sessions. Register with your Workforce Advisor for this webinar series. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. Five-part series for educators, health professionals, or the public who desire a broader education about the region’s first peoples. Curriculum with a mental health lens on the historical hardships Native Americans face in contemporary times due to colonization. The curriculum encompasses the vital nature of California’s history from the Native American perspective. Inclusive of the pre-contact history, the series continues onto atrocities as Euro-settlers invaded the continent and ultimately California. The result on the Native people was a trauma so severe it embedded into the DNA. The presentation of historical trauma of the land’s first peoples is concluded with a healing element to create a space for understanding.

Anti-bias and anti-racism (April 10, 2024 5:30-7:30pm -Virtual Zoom) Policies, structures, procedures, and processes to counteract and prevent bias and racism will be embedded into learning environments and curriculum. These structures will promote expanded communities of learners that enable everyone to learn and grow in an environment with mutually respectful relationships. Cradleboard to Toddling Pathway

This pathway focuses on the Parent Infant Toddler Care (PITC) approach to infant/toddler care and addresses how to support healthy social-emotional development and learning in group care settings. Course topics include an exploration of different temperament tendencies; stages of social-emotional development; development of self-esteem, security, and social competence; socialization and guidance, and program policies that best support the healthy social-emotional development; learning, culture, and families. The course also covers early brain development and learning; discoveries of infancy; culture; partnerships with families; and working with children with special needs.

Social/ Emotional Development Cohort (Virtual- 20 hours total) This course focuses on the Program for Infant/Toddler Care (PITC) approach to infant/toddler care and, specifically, how to support healthy social-emotional development in group care settings. Included will be physics, coding, robotics, math, science, engineering, and more. Participants will get to take home materials and handouts to use in their own programs.

2023/2024 TCCAC Workforce Pathways Program

With funding provided through CDSS’s QCC Workforce Grant, The Tribal Child Care Association of California (TCCAC) has developed a workforce program to support child care providers in all settings. This program provides teachers in centers, providers with family friend and neighbor programs, aunts and grandmas operating relative care programs, everyone who is dedicated to caring for Tribal children in California an opportunity to further develop their skills in culturally relevant ways. TCCAC will support participants by identifying and overcoming barriers to reaching goals through financial supports, identifying resources and incentivizing goal completion with a stipend program.

Workforce Requirements:

• You must be a current child care provider for children in Tribal Early Learning and Care Programs age 0-5 years. Employment verification is required.
• iPinwheel Application Deadline: December 31, 2023
• Register a new account: https://tccac.ipinwheel.org/StaffApplication/Account/Register
• You do not need to re-register on iPinwheel if you participated in the 22/23 Workforce Year, but you must notify your Workforce Advisor that you want to participate again and schedule your PD Plan Meeting.
• Stipends provided for all courses/ trainings completed between July 1, 2023 – June 15, 2024.
• Each participant will work with the Workforce Advisor to set goals and identify resources needed. You must meet with your Workforce Advisor to create a Professional Development Plan to receive your stipend.
• There may be a cap on stipend totals. Potential earning bonuses available dependent on program participation and availability of funds.
• Stipends will be paid out in October 2024.

TCCAC Higher Education

TCCAC wants to ensure participants are supported to meet their higher education goals. Participants working towards Teacher Certification, Associates Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, or Master’s Degree with an emphasis on Early Learning and Care will receive stipends upon completion. TCCAC can support with books, materials, and other expenses related to reaching your higher education goals. The Workforce Advisor will assist with goal setting and identifying needed supports.

The Discovery Source –Controlling Anger & Impulse: Tucker Turtle Kit Northern Summit, Redding, CA (1.5 hour) In early childhood programs, young children frequently require support and adult guidance and instruction to express their emotions appropriately, play jointly with peers, and use basic problem-solving strategies. Tucker Turtle used a scripted social story that helps her to manage impulse-control issues: in early childhood settings, many accidents occur in classrooms (e.g., children bumping into one another; children knocking over others’ constructions), and some children interpret these accidents as purposeful, hostile acts. One essential ingredient is to help children reframe and modify their processes to see more neutral interpretations of others’ behaviors. This session reviews the Tucker Turtle Technique as a visual tool to help children to learn how to control their emotions and handle possible solutions, assisting teachers with practical and age-appropriate strategies to modify their thoughts and promote self-regulation.

Administrators/Leaders THRIVE Cohort (Virtual/ Zoom) 8 Session starting in September 2023 Thursdays 3:00-4:30pm *Limited to 15 people. Look at what burnout is and is not, where you and your employees may fall on the burnout spectrum, and what to do about it. Learn practical, evidence-based strategies to help improve your resilience and life balance as well as strategies for structuring the work environment to improve these areas for you and your employees. During the eight weeks, you will receive individualized support and strategies from your facilitators and your cohort. The session structure is as follows: The first session is a presentation of new material and a facilitated group discussion. Homework is given to prepare for the next session. The following week’s session will focus on the application of the homework and a group coaching session. Coaching Companion (Virtual) Choose any coaching companion cycle to support your professional development goals. Engaging Families in Tribal Communities Pathway

TCCAC has partnered with the Child Care Resource Center to create this pathway for those wanting to increase their skills for engaging families and hosting Parent Cafes in their communities.

CCRC Regional Parent Cafe Trainings

Northern California- October 13, 2023 -Eureka, CA (all day in-person training)

Southern California- October 16, 2023- La Jolla, CA (all day in-person training)

This Parent Café training is for tribal child care providers. The Parent Café model is based on the foundation of Strengthening Families 5 Protective Factors and has proven to be an effective way to engage parents in discussions around topics that are relevant to their community. Programs have reported an increase in parent engagement and an interest for more cafes. Café conversation themes and topics are flexible and can be developed to address the needs of any situation. The goals for parent cafes is to provide engagement, connections, learning and opportunities for Parent Leadership building. During this training, participants will learn about the framework of the café and work on creating a café that they may take back with them to their program. Incentives: These trainings are completely free! Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants. There will be incentives and raffles! TCCAC Workforce Participants can submit training certificates to Workforce for a stipend. And PDGR funds can provide all eligible programs with café stipends of up to $2400 per café for participants to facilitate cafes in their community before the end of the 2023 year. 

Trauma Informed Care/ Parent Cafe Cohort for FFN & FCC (Virtual/ Zoom) Cohort limited to15 people. Must attend all sessions. Participants (limited to Family Friend and Neighbor & Family Child Care Providers) will engage in 8 hours of training on Trauma Informed Care (Definitions of trauma, The impact of trauma on the brain and children’s behavior, Key strategies to support children, build their resilience, and minimize the adverse effects of trauma) and continue the conversation with their cohort in 3 Provider Cafés. The café sessions are intended for providers to engage in meaningful conversations around Trauma Informed Care, with questions focused on self-care, their strengths and challenges while providing TIC, and growth within the field. Conversations will be opportunities to learn from one another but also get social support from others who are also providing care to children who have experienced trauma. The five protective factors are woven into the cafes. This experience will build knowledge on caring for children who are experiencing trauma and provide opportunities to share and learn from peers.

Strengthening Families / Protective Factors Live Cohort (Virtual/ Zoom) 7 Sessions on The Five Protective Factors are the foundation of the Strengthening Families Approach: parental resilience, social connections, concrete support in times of need, knowledge of parenting and child development, and social and emotional competence of children. Research studies support the common-sense notion that when these Protective Factors are well established in a family, the likelihood of child abuse and neglect diminishes. Research shows that these protective factors are also “promotive” factors that build family strengths and a family environment that promotes optimal child and youth development.

Cultural Humility Pathway

This pathway offers opportunities to understand the accurate history of Native Americans; explain the historical process of the extreme systematic trauma to the Native population and show how California Natives are still present, active, and involved in the modern world. Examples and explorations of tribal resilience, medicine, storytelling, and culture.

Curriculum with a mental health lens on the historical hardships Native Americans face in contemporary times due to colonization. The curriculum encompasses the vital nature of California’s history from the Native American perspective. Inclusive of the pre-contact history, the series continues onto atrocities as Euro-settlers invaded the continent and ultimately California. The result on the Native people was a trauma so severe it embedded into the DNA. The presentation of historical trauma of the land’s first peoples is concluded with a healing element to create a space for understanding.

This pathway focuses on the Parent Infant Toddler Care (PITC) approach to infant/toddler care and addresses how to support healthy social-emotional development and learning in group care settings. Course topics include an exploration of different temperament tendencies; stages of social-emotional development; development of self-esteem, security, and social competence; socialization and guidance, and program policies that best support the healthy social-emotional development; learning, culture, and families. The course also covers early brain development and learning; discoveries of infancy; culture; partnerships with families; and working with children with special needs.

This workshop will help participants to: Recognize the capabilities of the young, mobile, and older infants related to the emergence of communication. Understand the influence of culture on a child’s language development and communication style. February 2024 STEM it UP! In Person- Southern Summit (2hrs) With Tamar Andrews.  Immerse yourself in a STEM environment where you get to experience many facets of STEM work and play as a child would.  Learn how easy it is to use found and free materials to build a space where children want to explore, discover, create, imagine and be curious about the world they live in. Included will be physics, coding, robotics, math, science, engineering, and more. Participants will get to take home materials and handouts to use in their own programs.

2023/2024 TCCAC Workforce Pathways Program

With funding provided through CDSS’s QCC Workforce Grant, TCCAC has developed a workforce program to support child care providers in all settings. This program provides teachers in centers, family child care homes, providers with family friend and neighbor programs, aunts and grandmas operating relative care programs, everyone who is dedicated to caring for Tribal children in California an opportunity to further develop their skills in culturally relevant ways.

TCCAC will support the participant by identifying and overcoming barriers to reaching goals through financial supports, identifying resources and incentivizing goal completion with a stipend program. Participants can choose to work on higher education goals toward degrees or certifications and/or a professional development track in a variety of child care topics.

(Program Year- July1, 2023-June 30, 2024) TCCAC Professional Development Pathways

TCCAC has created seven custom pathways to support professional development for Tribal Child Care providers. The pathways offer both virtual and in-person training options. In addition, TCCAC will provide stipends for other professional development trainings and certifications as approved by each individual plan.

• Health & Safety This Pathway focuses on basic health and safety standards required for Tribal Child Care programs, as well as ways to go beyond the basics with best practices. Participants can choose topics that are most relevant for them and their programs. Monthly, Zoom Health & Safety Webinars as well as a series on Nature in ECE will be the foundation of this Pathway.
• Wellness & Healing Pathway This Pathway focuses on healing and resiliency by addressing topics around trauma faced by children, families, providers, and communities as well as social/ emotional learning. A variety of virtual cohorts and in person trainings are offered in this Pathway and will include Trauma Informed Care and ACES training opportunities.

TCCAC Higher Education Pathway TCCAC wants to ensure our Workforce participants are supported to meet their higher education goals. The TCCAC Workforce Advisor will work with each participant to set goals and identify needed supports. For those who are working towards Teaching Certification, Associates Degrees, Bachelor’s Degrees, Masters Degrees or any higher education with an emphasis on Early Learning and Care, TCCAC can assist with textbook reimbursement, class materials and any other expenses related to reaching your higher education goals. Incentives include stipends for course completion and/or obtaining your degree or certificate.

• Cultural Humility This Pathway offers opportunities to understand the accurate history of Native Americans; explain the historical process of the extreme systematic trauma to the Native population and show how California Natives are still present, active, and involved in the modern world. Including, examples and explorations of tribal resilience, medicine, storytelling, and culture. Virtual 5-session cohort.
